The important part of a gym membership

Gyms make money from people who stop coming and keep paying. Everything important in the contract is about how hard it is to leave.

The four parts that decide it

1

Minimum term and how to cancel

The commitment length, the notice period, and the channel. If cancellation must be by registered post or in person while joining took thirty seconds online, that asymmetry is deliberate.

2

What happens after the minimum term

Almost always automatic rollover, monthly, at a price that may not be the introductory one. Diarise the end of the minimum term the day you sign.

3

Freezing and medical exit

Whether you can pause, for how long, at what cost, and what evidence a medical cancellation requires. This is the clause that matters when life happens.

4

Price changes and fees

Annual increases, joining fees, maintenance fees charged twice a year, and the charge for a failed direct debit. The headline monthly price is rarely the whole cost.

The traps

  • A twelve-month term sold as "only €X a month", where leaving in month two still costs you the other ten.
  • Cancellation notice measured in billing periods, so a late request costs you two more months.
  • A separate annual maintenance charge that appears in month four and again in month ten.

Red flags

  • No written route to cancel, or a route that only exists at the branch during working hours.
  • A clause allowing the gym to move, reduce or close facilities with no reduction in price.
  • Debt collection language for a missed monthly payment on a consumer service.

Three easy wins

  • Ask for a rolling monthly contract. It exists at nearly every chain and is rarely offered.
  • Send the cancellation in writing and keep proof, even if they say a phone call is enough.
  • Set a calendar reminder for one month before the minimum term ends. This one habit saves more money than any negotiation.

Questions

Can I cancel a gym contract early?

Usually only for defined reasons such as relocation or medical grounds, each with its own evidence requirement. Consumer law in many places also voids unfair lock-ins, but you have to raise it.

Why is cancelling harder than joining?

Because the business model depends on it. Friction on exit is a design decision, not an administrative accident.

Now do it to the actual document
