The important part of a car finance agreement

Monthly payment is the number they show you. Total amount payable, mileage limits, the balloon at the end, and who owns the car are the numbers that decide the deal.

The four parts that decide it

1

Total amount payable

Not the monthly payment. The single figure that includes interest, fees and the final payment, which is the only honest way to compare two offers.

2

Mileage limit and excess charge

The annual allowance and the price per unit over it. An optimistic estimate at signing becomes a bill three years later, and it is cheaper to buy the mileage up front.

3

The final payment

In balloon or lease-purchase structures, the large sum due at the end if you want to keep the car. Know the figure and know what the car will be worth then.

4

Who owns it, and condition on return

In most structures the finance company owns it until the last payment. On return, the definition of fair wear and tear becomes the most expensive paragraph in the document.

The traps

  • A deposit contribution from the dealer that is conditional on using their finance, which is a discount you pay for in interest.
  • Add-ons folded into the monthly payment: paint protection, gap insurance, service plans.
  • Negative equity from an old agreement rolled into the new one, so you finance a car you no longer have.

Red flags

  • A quote given only as a monthly figure, with the total amount payable not shown.
  • An excess mileage charge with no stated cap.
  • A return condition standard that is not attached to the contract as a document.

Three easy wins

  • Ask for the total amount payable in writing before discussing the monthly figure at all.
  • Buy the mileage you actually drive, not the mileage that makes the quote look good.
  • Get the fair wear and tear guide as an attachment, and photograph the car on delivery.

Questions

Why is the monthly payment a bad comparison tool?

Because it can be lowered by extending the term, raising the final payment or cutting the mileage. Three offers with identical monthly payments can differ by thousands in total.

Can I hand the car back early?

Many agreements allow voluntary termination once a set proportion of the total is paid, typically about half. The right exists more often than it is mentioned.
