The important part of a mobile phone contract

A phone contract is two products sold as one: a loan for the handset and a service plan. Once you separate them, most of the confusion disappears.

The four parts that decide it

1

Handset cost versus airtime cost

Ask for the split. A "free" phone is a loan repaid inside the monthly fee, and the loan usually does not stop when it is repaid.

2

Minimum term and unlocking

How long you are committed, what leaving costs, and when the handset can be unlocked. These are three separate dates and they are rarely the same one.

3

Annual price rises

Many contracts allow an annual increase tied to an inflation index plus a fixed margin. Over a two-year term that turns the advertised price into a starting price.

4

Fair use and roaming

What "unlimited" means in the small print, the throttling threshold, and the roaming allowance and its cap. Unlimited is a marketing word with a number behind it.

The traps

  • Continuing to pay the handset portion after the handset is paid off, because the plan never drops in price.
  • Insurance and cloud add-ons enabled by default in the first month.
  • A discount that expires after a set number of months, buried in a footnote.

Red flags

  • Refusal to give the handset and airtime split in writing.
  • Early termination calculated on the full remaining airtime rather than the handset balance.
  • Automatic upgrade offers that restart the minimum term without saying so plainly.

Three easy wins

  • Buy the handset separately and take a SIM-only plan. It is almost always cheaper over two years.
  • Diarise the end of the minimum term and call to renegotiate the week before.
  • Check the annual rise formula and multiply it out before signing, not after.

Questions

Is a phone included in the contract cheaper?

Usually not over the full term, once the interest inside the monthly fee is counted. It is cheaper on day one, which is the day the decision gets made.

What does unlimited data actually mean?

Usually unlimited until a fair-use threshold, after which speed is reduced. The threshold is in the terms and is a real number.
